February 2020 visit

Howard Frost · February 9, 2020 ·

On February 9, 2020, the Moldova Mission Network in conjunction with National Presbyterian’s Building Up the Global Church team hosted long-time NPC friend Reverend Valeriu Ghiletchi and his colleague from Parliament Reverend Ion Groza. Valieriu founded UDG with the assistance of NPC Associate Minister Peg Cantwell and others, and both Valeriu and Ion serve on UDG’s Board of Directors. Valeriu and Ion talked at luncheon afterwards how God had led them in their careers as pastors and as Members of Parliament. The two were visiting Washington as they attended the National Prayer Breakfast. Ion talked about the influence that his parents, both orphans, had had on him and that this influence had been important for him in his congregational work and his work on orphans at the school and in his community. Valeriu spoke about how God had protected him as a student and young adult because he would not join the age-appropriate Communist organization as he grew up. He noted the “motto” his parents had imparted of “Do your best, and let God handle the rest!,” which he said had remained good guidance as an adult during the times he was founding UDG, serving as Bishop of the Baptist Church, and serving in Parliament. Valeriu talked about the theological aspects of the UDG students’ education, about the social work program there, and about UDG’s outreach to Central Asia. The previous evening, friends of the Moldova Missions Network at NPC and other churches hosted Valeriu and Ion at a private home. The group enjoyed a lengthy discussion about UDG, church life in Moldova, and orphan care.

Building Up the Global Church program

Howard Frost · September 22, 2019 ·

On September 22, MMN representatives and members of NPC’s Building Up the Global Church team presented a program where UDG’s US Development Director Paul Beech and UDG Academic Dean Mihai Malancea joined by Skype. Paul and Mihai talked about developments at the school and some of its recent program successes in Moldova and countries of the former Soviet Union. Because of restrictions on religious workers in those countries, especially if internationals are involved, little can be posted on the Internet.

Save the Orphans – National Presbyterian Church program

Howard Frost · June 24, 2018 ·

On June 24 at a program at National Presbyterian Church, Sylvia Mader talked about her mission team’s work in Moldova in May 2018.

From April 29 – May 8, team member Sylvia Mader traveled to Moldova, where she met with Acting Dean of Faculty of Theology with Dr. Dumitru Sevastian and Provost Serghei Namesnic. Joined by UDG student volunteers, Sylvia, as part of her NGO Save the Orphans work, traveled in UDG’s bus to assist at several orphanages. The UDG team visited the Orhei orphanage where there are about 240 severely handicapped male orphans. The ten UDG students with and their guitars sung to the orphans about Jesus and distributed gifts of socks and fresh fruits.

The following days, the team visited both the Bulboaca and Carpineni Orphanages. There the group offered its full program of playing games, singing songs, and lectures. The team spoke about the importance of self-esteem and confidence, which is always a struggle for orphans as well as breaking the cycle of alcoholism and violence from their early childhoods. They distributed personalized t-shirts and hats with the message “you are beautiful.” The team spoke about the value of education as the key for success and for protecting themselves from the dangers of trafficking.

Sylvia traveled to orphanages with the ministry team of UDG students. The students provide music and song for the orphans and assisted in many other ways.
